What Is Senior Services?

Senior Services is a multi-service program which serves homebound elderly and disabled persons.  The goal of Senior Services is to be an effective provider of quality services that support the independence and self-sufficiency of seniors and disabled persons.

What Services Are Available?

Nutritious meals, housekeeping, personal care, respite and volunteer opportunities

Senior Service Programs include:

Nutrition
Homemaker Program
Foster Grandparent Program
Chore Program
Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)

Nutrition

The Nutrition Program provides a nutritious meal 5 days a week, Monday through Friday, in fourteen site locations. Regulations specify each meal must contain at least one third of the current daily Recommended Dietary Allowance as established by the FDA. In addition to promoting better health through improved nutrition, the program is aimed at reducing the isolation of old age, and offering older and disabled people the opportunity to live their remaining years in their homes without being institutionalized.

Congregate Meals
Congregate Meals are provided at senior centers, community centers and other public or private facilities where other social services are provided.

Home Delivered Meals
Home delivered meals are delivered by volunteers to eligible persons who are confined to their homes by reason of illness or disability.

Homemaker Program

The Homemaker Program is designed to meet the needs of aging and disabled individuals having difficulties with activities of daily living. Services covering a wide range of needs are provided in the home, such as housekeeping, personal care, and respite care.

The Homemaker Program provides general housekeeping, laundry, and errands. Personal care, in the form of stand-by assistance, helps with bathing, dressing and grooming. Respite services are provided to eligible full time caregivers.

Foster Grandparent Program

The Foster Grandparent Program provides personal services to children with special or exceptional needs by persons age 60+ with limited incomes. Grandparents provide special attention through social, emotional and educational support that school staff members often do not have the time to provide by working on a one-on-one basis with the children.

To be eligible, applicants must be 60 years of age and meet income guidelines. Foster Grandparents volunteer four hours a day, five days a week. In return they receive an annual physical examination, a hot meal each day they serve, and transportation to and from assigned stations, if necessary. Foster Grandparents also receive a non-taxable stipend of $2.65 per hour.

Chore Program

The Chore Program assist frail, low-income elderly and/or handicapped persons with little or no family support by providing basic housekeeping, and referrals for other needed services. Housekeeping services include: sweeping, dusting, mopping, vacuuming, grocery shopping, and laundry. Service is available up to two hours per week or every other week, depending on the person’s health and other sources of support. Services are provided by well-trained, experienced chore aides.

To be eligible for the Chore Program, an applicant must be homebound, elderly and or handicapped and meet the income eligibility standards set by the Department of Human Services.

Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) provides opportunities for people 55 and over to make a difference in their community through volunteer service. RSVP volunteers contribute from two to forty hours a week. They serve in schools, day care centers, hospitals, nursing homes, senior centers, community centers, and other non-profit and public organizations to help met critical community needs. RSVP staff helps seniors identify their interests and finds appropriate placement within the community to contribute their time and talents. Volunteers receive supplemental insurance while on duty, and on-the-job training from the agency or organization where volunteers are placed.
